Calling/Vision
I formed Land In Common as a consulting practice dedicated to addressing the root
causes of environmental degradation with three interrelated approaches:
Assisting Grassroots Environmental Organizations
I work with dedicated land trusts, watershed groups, landowners, talented colleagues,
and other stewards of land and water. Together, we secure funding and carry out
innovative ecological design projects, and launch initiatives to raise public awareness
about two great truths: 1) that land is a community to which we all belong; and, 2) that,
to heal ourselves, we must also heal the land.
Establishing a Network of Commons
As our culture faces the cumulative impacts of global warming, global population
growth, and peak oil, I believe it is essential that we provide groups and individuals
with affordable access to land for sustainable uses such as community supported
agriculture, sustainable forestry, ecovillages, and permaculture design. My recent work
with the School of Living (www.schoolofliving.org) and the E.F. Schumacher Society
(www.schumachersociety.org), has allowed me to focus on promoting Community Land
Trusts (CLTs) and other strategies for establishing a network of land “commons” as an
alternative to our tradition of speculative treatment of land as a commodity.
Education: Giving and Receiving
I am honored to offer guidance and training to the next generation of conservation
professionals through a course I designed and teach on Conservation and Land
Management in the Master of Environmental Studies program at the University of
Pennsylvania. Critical thinking is part of the course, so my students and I are offered
a chance to reconsider the meaning of stewardship and the root causes of
environmental degradation and social problems.
Purpose of Land In Common: To ensure a healthy living environment for people,
plants and animals, and to promote ecological land reform by establishing a network of
common lands held in trust as a community asset for sustainable use.
